Every once in a while, Colorado ski resorts have to close down for a day or two because of high winds that make it dangerous to operate the lifts. For instance, in February 2023, Steamboat Mountain Resort closed for a day due to high winds and extreme cold, while Winter Park scaled back its operations.
As of 11:30 a.m. Thursday, there were about 59,678 Xcel customers without power in Colorado. In a social media post, Xcel said gusts reached 90-100 mph in some places and said as soon it was safe, their crews began to assess damage. Restoration work is underway and is expected to last several days.

High winds left more than 200,000 people without power in northern Oregon and southern Washington
Portland General Electric, Pacific Power and Clark Public Utilities all reported tens of thousands without power Wednesday morning.
If Xcel implements another outage Friday as early as 6 a.m., some residents could be without power for more than three days, the utility said.
